An outback shack made famous by a true crime podcast and luxury rural retreats are among the Territory’s hottest property listings of 2024.
PropTrack analysis of realestate.com.au found the 10 NT properties that attracted the most clicks on realestate.com.au this year.
Coming in at number 10 was the most famous of the properties – 37 Stuart Highway, Larrimah.
Also known as ‘Paddy’s Place’, this home was sold by the Public Trustee after the disappearance of Paddy Moriarty from the tiny outback township of Larrimah.
His unsolved disappearance inspired journalists Kylie Stevenson and Caroline Graham to create the ‘Lost in Larrimah’ podcast and pen the book, ‘Larrimah: A Missing Man, an Eyeless Croc and an Outback Town of 11 People who Mostly Hate Each Other’.
These then inspired the Netflix show, ‘Last Stop Larrimah’.
‘Paddy’s Place’ was sold at auction for $32,000 on May 7 after a coronial inquest found Paddy was likely killed due to the ongoing feud between him and his nearest neighbours.
While listed for sale through Michael Van De Graaf and Daniel Harris of Real Estate Central, the property racked up 11,574 views online.
Darren Hunt of Real Estate Central said ‘Paddy’s Place’ was a unique listing that drew huge attention due to its owner rather than its bricks and mortar.
“It’s one of those iconic Territory properties with a story behind it, and what a story it is,” he said.
“For someone to say ‘I own that property’ would one of those quintessential Territory stories.”
Sitting at number one on the most viewed list is the stunning rural property at 90 Macleod Rd, Howard Springs.
The 1.99ha block with two beautifully presented homes and a striking poolside entertaining area attracted 14,989 online views and a sale price of $1.25m.
Mr Hunt, who sold 90 Macleod Rd with Mr Harris, said the property was a house designer’s own home offering a high end Territory lifestyle and potential for an Airbnb income.
“Occasionally you get a home that surpasses expectations and this property was just that, evident by views it received,” he said.
“The open homes were some of the busiest we had for the year – we had around 60 groups through in first two weeks.
“It sold to interstate buyers who saw considerable value in the property.”
The NT’s second most popular home online in 2024, with 14,682 views, is a rural cottage with a stunning Blue Lagoon-like waterhole at 4500 Fog Bay Rd, Dundee Forest.
On the market through Travis Uzkuraitis of First National Real Estate O’Donoghues for $420,000, the 12.25ha property comes with a two-bedroom home, shed, fire pit area and a crystal clear blue-hued dam.
Number three on the list is the acreage property at 78 Millar Rd, Humpty Doo, which sold for $1.2m in August and was viewed 14,370 times.
Rounding out the top five were a Darwin elevated at 6 Nadpur St, Ludmilla, and a modern executive home overlooking the ocean at 214 Casuarina Drive, Nightcliff.
Mr Hunt said the popularity of well-presented rural homes in the Darwin market in 2024 was evident by the most viewed list, with eight of the top 10 being acreage properties.
“Buyers were chasing the quintessential Top End lifestyle,” he said.
“However, we do expect interest to shift back to the northern suburbs of Darwin in 2025.”
