With serene surroundings and beautiful, tree-lined landscapes, here are the regional towns and cities that are attracting metro dwellers looking for a change of pace.
There are a few different ways to escape the hustle and bustle of city living. One is a tree change – where buyers pack their bags and move to a regional or remote area for its smaller community and laid-back lifestyle.
The lure for regional living has seen a continued uplift since the pandemic and the appeal remains strong.
The latest Regional Movers Index (RMI), found that as of the September 2024 quarter, 35.6% more people were moving to regional areas from capital cities than vice versa.
In contrast, migration from regional areas to capital cities fell by 5% over the same period.
So why consider a tree change? For many buyers, a tree change can be appealing for a few reasons.
The first is housing affordability with many regional areas giving buyers flexibility in finding a home that suits their needs for less. Another reason is the lifestyle, which often comes with less traffic, noise but also much more nature landscapes.
As the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the trend of Australians moving to regional locations, one challenge has emerged: the availability of housing.
Here, we look at key regions that offer that attractive change of pace, but that also have new homes in supply thanks to new targeted developments aimed at enhancing the existing communities.
1. Margaret River, Western Australia
Located three-hours south of Perth is Margaret River, a renowned wine region filled with plenty of natural beauty.
