A Gothic-style church in a town south of the Grampians National Park passed in at its auction on Saturday, but amassed a large portion of the community to reminisce.
St Mary’s Anglican Church at 89-93 Wills St in Dunkeld, about 283km west of Melbourne, was built in the 1860s and has a $420,000-$460,000 price guide.
Elders Real Estate Hamilton agent Dion McFarlane said there was about 40 people at the auction, many of which were former congregation members and nostalgic locals who came to recollect.

“It was like a big community get together,” Mr McFarlane said.
“We had the minister of Hamilton there, we had a representation from the diocese and trustees and a couple of the congregation members from Hamilton and Dunkeld were there.
“Then everyone caught up for a cup of coffee afterwards. It was a pretty friendly sort of thing. But unfortunately, no, it didn’t sell under auction.”
He added that the auction onlookers shared stories among themselves, like who they knew was baptised in the bluestone church.
“One lady said, I’ve just written my will and she said, I asked to be buried here and have the service in this church,” he said.
The property spans about 2341sq m and has two buildings; one completed in the 1860s and the other added on a century later.
The newer building has a vestibule, nave and alter while the older structure is now a hall with a kitchen used largely for functions and as a tea room.
Dark-stained beams and stained glass windows adorn both the buildings.
Mr McFarlane said he was confident there was a buyer out there, as during the campaign, there were many interested parties asking about transforming it into a home.
“It’s a decent chunk of land and some beautiful old buildings,” he said.
“Most of the questions I’ve fielded have been how do we go about turning this into a house.”
