An imposing landmark estate, which had been at the forefront of a legal dispute between the family of former Adelaide Lord Mayor Michael Harbison, has been listed for sale.

Expressions of interest are sought for the circa 1867-built High Victorian Villa at 3 Turner St, Gawler East, which in July this year was at the centre of a dispute between Mr Harbison, his brother, Gawler veterinarian William Harbison, and their sister, Catherine Harbison.

Ms Harbison was suing her brothers – who were countersuing her in turn – over the $3m estate of their late father, iconic Gawler MP Dr John Harbison.

Central to the dispute was “Carramar”, the nine-room, 175sqm villa, purchased by Dr Harbison and his wife, environmentalist and councillor Pat Harbison OAM, in 1956.

Catherine had taken out a caveat on the property and accused Michael and William, as their father’s executers, of “unnecessary expenditure” from the estate – which they denied.

The brothers asked the court to lift the caveat and give judicial advice as to whether Carramar and the neighbouring vacant lot could be sold “on the open market”.

In November, the court heard the siblings had reached a confidential settlement of their dispute – William then clashed physically with an Advertiser reporter outside court, unsuccessfully attempting to stop him filming the brothers.

Land Services SA records the property had since transferred to Ms Harbison for $717,500.

The impressive estate, which was built by William. S. Taylor, as one of Gawler’s and SA’s landmark historical properties, sits on a large 4555sqm block of land.

It is being sold by Bailey and Grant Fielke of Magain Real Estate, who describe the home as “imposing” on their ad on realestate.com.au.

“The stunning local High Victorian Villa combines stone and brickwork which has truly stood the test of time,” the ad reads.

“The unique construction and its features are showcased around the home, the outbuildings and the grounds are an example of the builder’s brilliant workmanship, which has flowed through to many other known historical buildings in Gawler and Adelaide.”
