15 Shipton Cres, Mollymook, which overlooks Collers Beach, went to auction on Sunday.

A house on the coast south of Sydney where Princess Diana came to visit has passed in at auction.

There was just one bid of $9.21m for the beach house at last Sunday’s auction for 15 Shipton Cres, Mollymook, described as an “epic beachside escape” in marketing.

Michael Coombs and Lisa Cox of Atlas had two registered parties and a $9m auction guide for the incredible four-bedroom home with pool and gate giving direct access to the dog-friendly Collers Beach.

It’s understood the original owners of the 1166sqm property, the Shipton family, for which the street is named, were family friends of the then Lady Diana when she visited in February 1981, just after Charles proposed and weeks before the announcement of their engagement.

Mollymook locals recall spotting the future princess sunbaking at Collers Beach and her “saying hello”.

By July of that year they were married.

The Shiptons rebuilt the home in 1990 and it sold for $890,000 in 1998.

The Maidments sold for $2.36m in 2016 and then three years ago, during the post-Covid boom, the Gills sold it to the Magicks at auction for $10m, setting a South Coast record.

That’s now been surpassed after a $12m sale by Cox at nearby Narrawallee.

The home, right on the beachfront, has extraordinary views.

At Sunday’s auction, as is common at the moment, there were a couple of lowball offers, of $8m and $8.8m, both rejected by auctioneer Peter Kakos, before one of the parties suggested $9.21m.

“We’ve had a lot of inquiry on it and coming into the Christmas period, a lot of people haven’t been able to actually see the property yet,” Coombs said.

“But we’ve had a couple more inspections since the auction and I’m confident we can get $10m-plus.”

He said that property sales had been slow on both the south coast and north coast this year, though they’ve picked up over the past two weeks.

Coombs has just sold the Byron Bay home of retired IT boss Ian Poole, who also owns in Mosman, at 84 Fowlers Lane, Bangalow for close to its $15m guide.
